PENTECOST SUNDAY REFLECTION AND HOMILY OF RD. YULIUS EKO: VENI CREATOR SPIRITUS
Sunday, May 24, 2026
📖 Today’s Readings: Acts 2:1–11 | Psalm 104 | 1 Corinthians 12:3b–7,12–13 | John 20:19–23
Pentecost is the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles. This feast is often called the birthday of the Church, because from that moment the disciples came out of fear and began proclaiming the Good News to all nations. In the First Reading, people from many different nations heard the mighty works of God in their own languages. This shows that the Holy Spirit comes to unite, renew, and send the Church into the world.
In today’s homily, Fr. Yulius Eko reminded us of the beautiful hymn of the Church: Veni Creator Spiritus — Come, Creator Spirit. This hymn is also a prayer that invites us to open our hearts to the work of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God’s gift that renews the human heart. He transforms fear into courage, confusion into understanding, and division into unity.
Today’s Gospel gives us three important messages as gifts from Jesus. First, “Peace be with you.” Jesus came to His fearful disciples and gave them peace. Second, “You are sent.” The peace we receive is not meant to be kept for ourselves, but to be shared with the world. Third, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” Jesus gave the Holy Spirit so that the disciples could carry out their mission not by human strength alone, but by the power of God.
Pentecost invites us to open our hearts to the Holy Spirit. We are called to become a living Church that courageously witnesses, brings peace, and becomes a channel of God’s love in our families, workplaces, communities, and society. May the Holy Spirit continue to ignite the fire of faith within us.
Prayer:
Come, Holy Spirit. Fill our hearts with peace, courage, love, and the spirit to be sent as witnesses of Christ. Amen.
May God bless us all ❤️
