Solemnity of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

📖 Today's Readings: Isaiah 49:1–6 | Psalm 139:1–3, 13–15 | Acts 13:22–26 | Luke 1:57–66, 80

In today’s Gospel, the Church celebrates the birth of Saint John the Baptist, the prophet chosen by God to prepare the way for the coming of the Messiah. When Elizabeth gave birth to a son, many wanted to name him Zechariah after his father. However, according to God’s will, the child was named John, which means “God is gracious.” From the very beginning of his life, John had a special calling from God. He was prepared to be the voice crying out in the wilderness and to lead many people to Christ.

The First Reading reminds us that God called and knew His servant even before birth. Likewise, today’s Psalm expresses awe at how God formed and knew each of us personally while we were still in our mother’s womb. No one is born by accident. Every person is created with a unique purpose, calling, and mission from God.

John the Baptist understood that his mission was not to draw attention to himself but to point others to Jesus. His life became a witness of true humility. He declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” This is the mark of a true disciple: living not for self-glory, but for the glory of God.

Today, the Lord invites us to reflect on our own calling. God has known us from the very beginning and has entrusted each of us with a unique mission. The question is: Does our life lead others closer to Christ? Through our words, actions, work, family life, and service, can others see God's love and goodness?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for knowing and calling us from the very beginning of our lives. Help us to discover and fulfill the mission You have entrusted to us. Make our lives like that of Saint John the Baptist—always pointing others to Christ and bringing glory to Your name. Amen.
