Lectio Divina on Wisdom 10:1-21 and My Experience with Rafael
1. Lectio (Reading the Word of God)
Wisdom 10:1-21 speaks of how God's wisdom has been present throughout history, guiding and protecting the righteous. It recounts how wisdom:
- Preserved Adam after his fall.
- Rescued Noah from the flood.
- Delivered Israel from slavery in Egypt.
- Protected the just and led them through trials.
This passage reminds us that wisdom is not just knowledge but an active, living presence of God in our lives, guiding us even when we don’t realize it.
2. Meditatio (Meditation on the Word of God) and My Experience with Rafael
Reading this passage, I am reminded of a powerful moment in my life—17 years ago, when my son Rafael was just about three months old. At that time, I was lost. After losing my job and failing in my attempts to start a business, I felt discouraged and hopeless. I even expressed my frustration, saying to my wife, “Our son Rafael does not bring luck.”
But then, something extraordinary happened—something only God could have orchestrated. At just three months old, Rafael suddenly uttered the word, “Banyakkan?” (which means “There are many”).
A three-month-old baby speaking so clearly was beyond natural explanation. It was as if God Himself was speaking directly to me, reminding me that there were many opportunities, many blessings, and many ways forward—I just needed to trust in Him.
At that moment, I realized my mistake. Just as Wisdom 10 describes how God’s wisdom intervened to save and guide His people, I understood that wisdom was also at work in my life. My despair had blinded me to the reality that God had not abandoned me. Instead, He was guiding me, much like He guided Adam, Noah, and Moses.
I had thought Rafael was a burden because of my struggles, but in truth, he was a sign of God’s abundant blessings.
3. Oratio (Prayer: Speaking to God)
"Lord, You have spoken to me in ways I never expected. When I was lost in my own despair, You used my son—an innocent baby—to remind me of Your wisdom and love. Just as You guided the righteous in the past, You continue to guide me today. Help me always trust in Your wisdom, even when I cannot see the way forward. Teach me to recognize Your voice in the unexpected moments of life. Amen."
4. Contemplatio (Contemplation: Resting in God's Presence)
Now, I sit in silence and reflect:
- Just as wisdom guided the great figures in the Bible, I see how it has guided me through Rafael’s words.
- Even when I felt lost, wisdom was there, showing me that there were still many possibilities.
- Now, 17 years later, Rafael is growing into the person God intended, a living testament to the blessings I once doubted.
5. Actio (Action: Living Out the Word of God)
This passage and my experience with Rafael call me to:
- Trust in God’s wisdom even in difficult times.
- Be attentive to how God speaks through unexpected ways—even through a three-month-old baby.
- Share my story with others to remind them that God’s wisdom is always at work, even when we don’t realize it.
Just as Wisdom 10 tells of God’s faithfulness in history, my own life testifies to the same truth:
God is always guiding, always speaking, always present—even in the voice of a baby.
